Former Bogoso-Prestea Mine Workers Cry for Justice as Promised Payments Remain Unfulfilled

Former employees of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine in Ghana’s Western Region have staged a protest calling for the immediate settlement of long-outstanding entitlements from Heath Goldfields Limited (HGL).

The workers, dressed in red shirts and headbands in a show of frustration, gathered at Bogoso on 30 October 2025, decrying repeated delays and shifting payment schedules since the mine’s lease was transferred.

The core issues include:

  • A lease transfer nearly a year ago, following revocation of the prior operator’s lease — yet workers claim most payments remain pending.
  • A memorandum from HGL dated 27 August 2025 committed to settling arrears by September, but a subsequent memo released on 6 October extended the deadline to December — a move described by workers as “a breach of faith.”
  • The unpaid entitlements include provident fund contributions, bonuses, severance pay, accrued leave, and other benefits mandated under the Labour Act.

In a statement, the worker group demanded:

  • The immediate payment of all outstanding benefits by HGL.
  • A full audit of HGL’s financial and operational capacity to honour its obligations and comply with the lease terms.

While the group acknowledged partial payments by HGL following government intervention, they maintain that five months after the ministerial ultimatum, significant liabilities still remain outstanding.

The situation highlights growing concerns in Ghana’s mining sector about worker protections, corporate transitions, and the enforcement of contractual and statutory obligations in the wake of ownership changes.
